LSOH meeting 8:
29/04/2021
On Thursday, it was decided that we would be practicing the makeup on the performers in time for their
rehearsal. This contributes to the show as by being able to practice our makeup designs on the actors
themselves, we can make any necessary changes, whether that be changes in the makeup or hair, or
even changing the actor we would be working on if anyone feels uncomfortable doing that makeup in
particular. This also gives us a chance to see approximately how long it would take for us to complete
the makeup in time for their rehearsals, demonstrating good time management and organisation skills.
This also shows good collaboration and communication skills as everyone knows who they’re working
on and who their peers are working on. Trying out the makeup on the actors was also important as they
can let us know if they feel comfortable and confident going onstage wearing that hair and makeup,
therefore if they don’t, we will be able to discuss any changes they want to make.
Stephen worked on practicing the male makeup on the actor who will be playing Orin. This makeup
was a straight male makeup, therefore it only consisted of foundation, contour, eyebrows and some
light mascara.
The image above shows Orin’s completed makeup.
Paige and I worked as a team to practice the Audrey Two makeup on the designated actress.
Throughout the progression of this makeup design, it was consistently inspired by drag style makeup,
which included accentuated eyes, overdrawn lips, and prominent eyebrows. Paige and I took most of
our inspiration from the drag queen Crystal Methyd, especially for the lip shape as her makeup has a
very unique style to it that could be used for the performance.
This makeup consisted of green eyeshadow, green eyeliner with a white inner corner that blends into
the green nose contour, dark brown, arched eyebrows, pale skin, a gradient purple to pink contour on
the cheeks, jaw and forehead. We also applied a red lip colour.
Since there were two of us applying this makeup, we communicated with each other and had decided
to delegate different aspects of it to each other depending on each others strengths: Paige and I worked
together on the foundation and the contour, I did the eyebrows and the lips whilst Paige did the eye
makeup. This also shows effective teamwork and time management skills as by delegating different
parts of the makeup to work on to each other, we were able to speed up the process as well as seeing
what works best for us (for example: it was easier having Paige work on the eye makeup whilst I worked
on the opposite eyebrow).
Whilst applying the makeup, we spoke to the actress about hair. The actress had mentioned how she is
going to be keeping it the same length, but will be dyeing it a dark red colour. This was helpful to us as
we had decided that putting the hair in a bin would be the best option since during the show, she will be
moving around a lot and having the hair down (or even in a ponytail) would just get in the way, to which
the actress agreed.
The images above show the final result of the makeup. Once this was finished, Paige and I had noticed
some changes that will need to be made. This included the foundation, lip shape and the eyeshadow
angle. For the foundation, when we applied it, it layed on too thin, therefore once all the rest of the
makeup had been applied, we could see that the foundation didn’t lay well on her skin as it came out
patchy. To fix this, Paige and I discussed using a primer before applying the makeup to give the
foundation a better hold on the skin. We had also decided to lay off the powder until the rest of the
makeup had been completed, just in case we needed any touch-ups by the end. For the lip shape,
we had originally decided to extend the outer corners of the lips outwards. However, this didn’t work
too well as when she smiled, the corners couldn’t be seen. To fix this, Paige had suggested changing
the angle of the red lip to angle upwards rather than outwards as this will make it more noticeable when
she smiles. For the eyeshadow angle, since the eyebrows are further down than we had anticipated, this
means that to prevent the eyeshadow from overlapping the eyebrows, Paige would need to extend the
eyeshadow outwards rather than upwards.
The images above show Paige and I working on the actress and how we organised our base.
This demonstrates good health and safety as we wore masks at all times when working on the actress,
had a clean and organised base and made sure there was enough space for us both to pass around her
when needed.
Francesca, Isobel and Kassie each worked on practicing the hair and makeup for The Girls on the three
actresses that will be playing these characters. They all matched the makeup by continuously using
browns, as well as making the makeup appear glamorous. They each (as well as Eleanor) tried out
different hairstyles for The Girls as it was important to make them unique in some way, whilst matching
in another. These hairstyles included space buns and braided pigtails.
The images above show Kassie, Francesca and Isobel working on The Girls makeup and Eleanor
working on creating space buns for one of The Girls.
Once the makeup was finished, it was decided that the makeup done on one of The Girls needed to
have thinner eyebrows as the actress didn’t feel comfortable going onstage with thick, dark eyebrows.
To change this, it was decided that she would have thinner eyebrows applied on the night.
The hair for Orin was also discussed, the actor may be getting short back and sides and plans to use
hair gel to style it.
This shows good communication skills as we discussed our ideas with the actors, and took in any
feedback they had in terms of whether or not they liked the different aspects of the makeup, and if not,
what they wanted changing.
Once the actors had left for rehearsal, we all decided what to do next. Eleanor and Francesca worked
on creating face charts for the remaining characters that weren’t completed prior to practicing the
makeup. It was important to finish them beforehand so that they knew which product to use and how
they were going to apply the makeup.
Whilst they did this, Paige, Kassie, Leah, Isobel and myself worked on creating designs using a trace
of the actors face. We did this because it gives us a better idea on where to apply the makeup on their
face/how it would look, and how we needed to adjust the makeup depending on the actor's features
(for example: the placement and angle of the eyebrows).
