The LSOH production was held at Teesside University, The Hub.

Day 1: 20/05/2021

On the first day of the production, everyone showed up on time at around 11am. Paige and I

showed up at around 9:30 to give us enough time to find the location of the venue and take a short

break before we went back to set up. This shows good time management skills, teamwork and

good communication skills as we both organised a suitable time for us to meet up and worked

together to find the venue beforehand using Google Maps. 

Once we had all arrived at The Hub, we took a look around the room we will be working in, as well

as the room the production will be held in. This was important as we were able to find the best light

sources suitable for applying the makeup under/in front of as well as how the tables were arranged

and how we could set up on them. This included: where the actor will sit, which tables would be

best for working on in terms of lighting and how we could organise everything to give us as much

space as possible.

Since the room only had overhead lighting and windows towards the back of the room, Paige and I

had decided to set our base up on one of the tables at the the back in front of the windows as the

natural lighting will prevent the overhead lighting from casting shadows onto the actress’ face

whilst we are applying the makeup. It is also better for us to be stationed there as we will need to

have a good source of ventilation whenever we use the hairspray.

When setting up our base, Paige and I practiced good health and safety by making sure the table

we were working at was cleaned beforehand, we had set out and organised all the products we will

be using and arranged them to provide space for the actress to sit on the table. We also made sure

coats and bags were out of the way of our working area to prevent anyone from tripping over them,

as well as having any chairs either tucked underneath the table or moved to the outer areas of the

room. The tables were also set up 2 meters apart to comply with COVID guidelines. When we

were cleaning up, we made sure to get rid of any waste (such as cotton buds/pads, makeup wipes

and bedroll), cleaning and sanitizing the makeup brushes used, cleaning and sanitizing makeup

palettes and spatulas, and cleaning the base we had been working on with disinfecting wipes.

Good health and safety is important as people would be moving around the room a lot due to the

hair products and their own bases being stationed at different areas of the room, as well as the

actors having to make their way through and around the room to get from the stage area to the

makeup base. Since we will all be working in the same room on both nights, it is important to keep

the place clean and sanitized to prevent the spread of bacteria.

The images above show how Paige and I had organised the base together, including where we put

our brushes, how we organised our makeup and a suitable place for the actor to sit.

Once the actors had finished their first rehearsal, Paige Goodings and I had decided to only work

on the actress playing Audrey Two’s hair for the dress rehearsal rather than the makeup. This was

because we had begun working on the actress at 12pm and wanted the makeup to be fresh for the

show at 7pm. However, if we had done both the makeup and hair for the dress rehearsal, by the time

the show had started, the makeup could’ve worn away due to natural oils and the stage lighting and

would’ve needed quite a few touch ups, which would’ve caused the makeup to appear too ‘cakey’.

For the hair, Paige and I had planned to put the hair into a large double bun to create enough

height and width so as to not overpower the vastness of the makeup or costume. However, no one

was available to do Audrey Two’s hair on the night, therefore Paige and I went through three

different Youtube videos to learn the easiest and most effective way to create this hairstyle.

the hair for Audrey Two.

To achieve this hairstyle, we began by brushing through the hair and creating a slick ponytail on

the top of the actress’ head. Once we had the ponytail in the centre of her head, we placed the first

bun around the ponytail, pulled out large sections of hair and began pinning these in place with

hair pins to cover the bun. Then, we applied the second bun and pinned the remaining sections of

hair on the top of the bun to cover it. Next, we used hairspray and hair gel to smooth the flyaways’

of the actress’ hair to prevent the backlights on the stage from illuminating her hair and making it

look ‘frizzy’. Finally, we had picked out some colour coordinated flowers and leaves to pin onto the

hair to give it a more ‘plant-like’ look, the colours included pinks, purples and greens to match the

makeup and costume.

The image above shows Paige and I working on Audrey Two’s hair. This image demonstrates how

we were working safely in doing so: we both wore masks at all times and kept the window open

whenever we used the hairspray, we also only used the hairspray in small amounts at a time to

prevent the fumes from being overwhelming and potentially harmful.

The images above show the stages we worked in up until the final hairstyle. Once we had finished

the hair, the actress went to the dress rehearsals.

Once they had finished with the dress rehearsals, we had about 2 hours and 30 minutes to finish

the actors' makeup before the show. Paige and I began by checking to make sure the hairstyle we

did on Ellie stayed in place well, if it needed any areas changing and if it was comfortable for her.

It was important for us to do this as the actress needed to keep her hair in that style throughout the

entire show later that night.

Once we had done this, we began working on her makeup together. We managed to complete the

makeup in time by assigning tasks to each other; it worked out so that Paige would work on the

eye makeup and contour whilst I did the eyebrows and body foundation. We both worked together

to create the lip, I did the base colour, whilst Paige created the final lip shape.

If either of us had free time whilst working on the makeup, we would clean up our working area to

keep it organised.

Since the actress was sitting on a table during the entirety of us applying the makeup, we frequently

checked up on her to make sure she was comfortable or if she needed a break at any point.

During the show's interval, since we only had around 15 minutes, Paige and I worked together to

make small adjustments to the makeup to show the character's development. Paige applied red

glitter to the lip and applied a small amount of powder to any oily areas on Ellie’s face to make sure

the makeup stays on during the rest of the show. Whilst she did this, I applied pink and purple

rhinestones to the cheek contour and green rhinestones to the green eyeliner using eyelash glue.

Since the actress had to stay on the stage at all times, Paige and I had to find a suitable way to get

to her without being seen by the audience. This is why we wear a black uniform; this helps us stay

hidden when navigating our way through the set toward the actress without being noticed by the

audience. We quickly made our way around the back of the stage and hid behind a piece of stage

equipment next to the plant pot to keep us hidden whilst we applied the changes.

near at the back of the stage.

Once we made it back into the makeup room after the interval, we began putting our makeup

back into our kits, cleaning up our waste and disinfecting the worktop using disinfectant wipes.

This is to make sure our area is clean for the next day. We decided to leave our kits at the venue

overnight as we would be working on them the next day, however, we took our brushes back home

with us to clean them. It is important for us to keep our brushes clean in between makeup

applications as bacteria can build up on the makeup on the brush if it left there for too long or

reused too many times without being cleaned properly. This bacteria could lead to many harmful

outcomes, such as a skin infection or even just an outbreak of spots.

Once the show was over, at around 9pm, Paige and I went backstage to assist Ellie in taking off the

lashes and asking her if she needed any help taking off the hair accessories. The actress had

decided to disassemble her hair at home that night and bring the buns and accessories back the

next day.

Day 2: 21/05/2021

The final day of the production was almost the same as the first, however, there weren’t any dress

rehearsals taking place then, so we were able to get straight into the hair and makeup once

everyone had arrived at around 3pm. Paige and I arrived at the venue at around 1:30pm to give

us some extra time to get our bases set up and organised. This shows good time management

skills as we gave ourselves enough time to walk to the venue, set up/organise our bases and have

a short break before the actors arrive.

Once the actors had arrived, we all began working on the actors' hair and makeup. Whilst doing

this, Paige and I made sure the actress was comfortable the whale way through by asking her if

she is okay or if she needed a break. This was important as the actress sat in a chair and on the

table for almost 4 hours.
